A modern programmable or smart thermostat can reduce your HVAC runtime significantly by adjusting temperatures automatically based on your schedule — but only if it's wired and configured correctly for your specific heating and cooling equipment. An incorrectly wired thermostat can cause short-cycling, failure to heat or cool, or damage to the control board of your air handler or furnace.
