1. Low Refrigerant from a Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from inside your home and transfers it outdoors. If your system has a leak, the refrigerant charge drops below the level needed for efficient heat transfer, and your AC will run constantly without ever reaching your thermostat's setpoint.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include ice forming on the indoor evaporator coil, warm air coming from your vents despite the system running, and a hissing or bubbling sound near the outdoor unit. Simply topping off the refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary fix at best — the correct repair involves locating the leak, repairing it, and recharging the system to the manufacturer's specification.

2. Failed Capacitor or Contactor

Capacitors and contactors are electrical components that start and run the compressor and condenser fan motor in your outdoor unit. They're subjected to intense heat and electrical stress every time your system cycles, and they wear out over time.

A failed capacitor is one of the most common reasons an outdoor unit hums but doesn't actually start — or clicks off seconds after starting. The good news is that capacitors are relatively inexpensive and fast to replace. 3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

It might seem counterintuitive that an air conditioner can freeze in the middle of summer, but a frozen evaporator coil is a common culprit when your AC runs without cooling. The coil freezes when airflow across it is restricted — usually because of a clogged air filter, a blocked return vent, or a blower motor issue — or when the refrigerant charge is low.

If you notice ice on your indoor unit or refrigerant lines, turn the system off and switch the fan to "ON" mode to let the coil thaw. Then check your air filter. If the filter isn't the problem, call for service before running the system again to avoid damaging the compressor.

4. Dirty Condenser Coils

The result is a system that runs longer, works harder, and still can't keep your home cool.
